Stop the Bush/Cheney Assault on Endangered Species
For more than 30 years, the Endangered Species Act has protected wildlife at risk of extinction. Now the Bush/Cheney Administration wants to make some serious changes to this landmark law — changes that would eliminate vital checks and balances that are crucial to protect our wolves, polar bears and other imperiled wildlife.
Speak out now for polar bears, wolves and the nearly 1,400 species currently protected under the Endangered Species Act! Fill out the form below to urge your U.S. Representative and Senators to do whatever they can to stop this eleventh-hour assault on protections for our endangered wildlife.
America’s bears are facing a poaching plague. Increasing demand for traditional medicines using bear parts like gallbladders is fueling a lucrative black market — and poachers are targeting bears in the U.S.
Representatives Raul Grijalva (AZ) and John Campbell (CA) have introduced legislation that will help bears by banning the trade in gallbladders at the federal level. The Bear Protection Act will end a patchwork of state laws that create an enforcement nightmare and allows the illegal killing of bears to continue.
Tell your Representative to become a cosponsor of the Bear Protection Act today:
Polar bears are in trouble. The melting of the Arctic is killing them. Some are already starving and drowning. If global warming is allowed to continue, the Arctic will be entirely ice-free during the summer, dooming polar bears to extinction. But as you may have seen in the news over the past few days, federal bureaucrats are illegally delaying a decision to protect the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act. Meanwhile they are fast-tracking Arctic oil drilling while the bear remains unprotected!
The Center for Biological Diversity and our allies are preparing to go to court to force the administration to finalize the Endangered Species Act listing. But we need your help as well. Polar bears need a massive groundswell of public support to show that people are watching and will not tolerate delays, denial, or political game-playing. Please click here to sign our polar bear petition today. Tell the Bush administration to immediately list the polar bear as an endangered species. With your help, we'll send the petition with 50,000 signatures to the White House on January 31st.
It hasn't been a good year for polar bears. On Monday, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) released their 2006 Red List of Threatened Species, and for the first time, polar bears made the list. And according to a study published just last month, global warming could push polar bears to extinction in just 25 years. According to the IUCN, "Polar bears are set to become one of the most notable casualties of global warming." This bad news for bears comes just days after ExxonMobil, the world's largest oil company, announced first quarter profits of $8.4 billion. Take action today!
It's a stark contrast – ExxonMobil, swimming in cash, is the only major oil company still pushing to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most important onshore denning habitats for America's remaining polar bears. At the same time, polar bears are literally drowning due to melting sea ice. We can help polar bears, no matter where we live – by changing our activities that contribute to global warming and urging corporations to do the same. And one of the best ways to start is by letting ExxonMobil know that we won't buy their gasoline unless and until they stop trying to drill in the Arctic Refuge and start making a real investment in cleaner energy sources.
